Star Trek: Into the Badlands
The Badlands, a region of space some thousand light years across, have barely been explored by the Federation. The region is home to vast plasma storms that make navigation almost impossible, as few ships are capable of avoiding the jets of plasma that can destroy even the mightiest of hulls. Because of this the sector is home to few residents, containing the homeworlds of a few minor species and colonists who have left the Federation to make their homes on the frontier. Other than engaging in occasional anti-piracy operations Stafleet was content to leave this region of space alone. The discovery of the Bajoran wormhole changed that.
Three years ago the first stable wormhole was discovered near Bajor, this rift in spacetime connects the alpha and gamma quadrants, bridging a distance of 70,000 lightyears in mere seconds. The discovery of the first stable wormhole promises to usher in a new era of scientific advancement and peaceful exploration, and the great powers of the Alpha and Beta quadrants are eager to exploit this. In order to make the most of this opportunity the Federation Council has tasked Starfleet with charting new space lanes through the Badlands, as a direct route through them to the Bajoran system would cut travel times for Federation vessels by nearly 70%. Starfleet Command has dispatched several vessels to map the region, but it has not been without its challenges.
Unhappy with a new treaty, Federation Colonists along the Cardassian border have banded together. Calling themselves "The Maquis," they continue to fight the Cardassians. Some consider them heroes, but to the governments of the Federation and Cardassia, they are outlaws. They have established several bases of operation in the region, as the plasma storms provide protection against long range sensors. Additionally the USS Voyager was recently lost with all hands when patrolling the region; escalating tensions in an already tense region.
Starfleet Command has recently commissioned the USS Dauntless to continue Voyager's mission, to map the region, establish diplomatic contact with the natives, and maintain the peace of this sector of the Alpha quadrant.
